Stop Type 2 Diabetes Before it Starts! Posted on 14 Nov 10:00 , 0 comments

Chances are you know someone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. But did you know that according to the CDC, an estimated 33.9% of U.S adults aged 18 years or older had prediabetes in 2015.

Prediabetes (borderline) is a condition in which your blood sugar is high but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. The easiest way to determine if you have prediabetes is by taking a simple blood test. A diagnosis of prediabetes is made when your fasting blood sugar level is between 100-125.

A diagnosis of prediabetes can actually be good news. You can take charge of your health and with lifestyle modifications you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

    Prediabetes lifestyle change

A 5% to 10% weight loss combined with modest physical activity, such as walking 30 minutes at least 5 days a week, can cut your risk of developing diabetes in half.

Cutting out 250 calories per day will help you lose 1/2 pound each week. This could be small simple changes that could be as simple as eliminating a bedtime snack, reducing soda intake, switching from cream in your coffee to skim milk, or cutting portions.

Physical activity is also a key in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes. An increase of physical activity will help lower blood sugar levels. Glucose gets taken into the body through muscles. When you exercise, you help your muscles to more easily get the glucose out of your blood and into your body where it is used for energy.

    •  Try parking father away while shopping
    •  Take the stairs instead of the elevator
    • Start out slow and work up to a goal of 30 minutes of walking 5 days a week
    • If you sit all day, set an alarm to get up every hour and walk around your office or home

If you have pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes is not inevitable. With some lifestyle modifications you can lose weight and start to exercise to stop the progression of diabetes.
